Professor Lopes specializes in cultural sociology, media studies, and popular culture. His work explores the sociology of art while paying particular attention to social inequality and the influence of race and ethnicity in popular media. Lopes has been published in numerous journal articles and has written several books, including The Rise of a Jazz Art World, Demanding Respect: The Evolution of the American Comic Book, and his most recent work, Art Rebels: Class, Race and Gender in the Art of Miles Davis and Martin Scorsese.
Prior to joining 鶹Porn in 2005, Lopes held teaching positions at the University of California–Berkeley, the University of San Francisco, Tufts University, Mount Holyoke College, and Smith College. He earned his bachelor of arts from UC Berkeley, and his master’s from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He then went on to earn a PhD from UC Berkeley.
