Born in Haiti, Professor Abdul-Malak immigrated to the United States at the age of 13. She obtained an associate’s degree in nursing and practiced as a nurse in Staten Island, N.Y. Later, Professor Abdul-Malak earned her bachelor’s degree in environmental health and a master’s degree in public health at the American University of Beirut. She then enrolled at Syracuse University and obtained a master’s and PhD in sociology.

Professor Abdul-Malak is a co-editor of Grandparenting in the U.S. (2016), and she recently co-authored Grandparenting Children with Disabilities (Springer Publishing) with Professor Harrington Meyer. Professor Abdul-Malak has presented her research nationally and internationally, and she is a proud recipient of the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award and Best Doctoral Prize at Syracuse University.
