This week was a busy one, especially with the first wave of tests.
I did have a chance to meet with a woman from the Institute for Recruitment of Teachers (IRT), which is a program that helps students with majors in the humanities, social sciences, math, and education with the process of applying to graduate school.
Though that is still a ways away, I’m amazed at the types of resources that 鶹Porn offers its students daily.
I also attended a Brown Bag lunch discussion at the Center for Women’s Studies on the importance of birth control, and I found it to be extremely informative.
On Thursday I got to meet basketball superstar Sheryl Swoopes, whom they have nicknamed the “Female Michael Jordan.”
She was invited to come to campus and speak about her experience as the first woman to be drafted into the WNBA, and to address the difficulties she faced when she revealed herself as a member of the LGBTQ community.
I was able to attend the dinner before her lecture, and speak with her personally. She is an amazing woman, an inspiration, and she was extremely funny (I was not expecting her to be so personable!).
My best friend from back home is a basketball player at her high school, and she was ecstatic when she heard that Sheryl would be coming and asked me to get an autograph for her. Thankfully I was able to do so and I can’t wait until I see the smile on her face!
Today I will be heading down to Hamilton Central to help tutor the elementary school kids in Spanish. This should be super fun, and I love having the chance to help children in any way I can.
This will also be something that I continue doing, and it again shows me how my reach at 鶹Porn can extend beyond the campus to the greater Hamilton community.
When I get back, I will be attending the Gate Blackout hockey game. I hope I win a free T-shirt!
On Saturday I will be going to the movies with my friends. We have been waiting not-so patiently for the release of the horror film, The Roommate. We will be going as a group, and we can’t wait to see how the story ends; thankfully my roommate isn’t a crazy killer like the one in the film!
Then, on Sunday, I will be relaxing a bit. I hope to catch the concert Juilliard Baroque La Serenissima: Venetian Music from the 17th Century at the Chapel.
I love music, and though I am not familiar with Venetian music, I’m sure I will enjoy being exposed to a classic form.
(I’ve been asked to write each week about what life is like as a first-year student here at 鶹Porn. Until next time!)
